Avocado Green vegan mattress review by a real person who owns one!

UPDATED ON September 25th, 2021

We’ve been using the vegan mattress with pillow-top from Avocado Green Mattress for about three months. Here is an honest review. We don’t have a super slick instagram-ready house but here are some hopefully not-too-embarrassing pictures to show you this vegan mattress in action.

Too long didn’t read: So far we are both totally into this mattress even though I usually like firm and my husband likes soft. The combo of a firm mattress with a soft vegan pillow-top works perfectly for us.

My back pain from my old mattress is gone even though I’m 5 months-pregnant, but this could also be due in part to switching to a standing desk and adding a lumbar support pillow to my car at the same time.

It’s also a plus to us that not only is the mattress vegan, but it’s  made from organic and natural materials by a sustainably-minded company. Read on for details about every aspect of ordering and sleeping on an Avocado vegan mattress!

Taking the plunge without trying it first:

I was hesitant to order such a big item without getting to try it in person. I’ve always bought mattresses from local stores. But more and more of my friends have been ordering mattresses online and Avocado Mattress offers a 100 day risk-free sleep trial. If you don’t like the mattress, they’ll pick it up, recycle or donate it for you, and refund your money. If you opt for free shipping rather than in-home set-up, and you end up not liking it, you will lose nothing.

We purchased our last mattress from a brick-and-mortar store for about $300. I like firm, and my husband likes soft, and we ended up with something neither of us liked. It also wasn’t very well-made and we were rolling off the sides by the end. Recently my lower back pain got worse and now newly pregnant, we decided we had to take action.

We did first visit a local store this time around, and the mattress we liked best turned out to cost $6,000. But, I wasn’t even sure if I really liked it or if it was just the one I liked best in the store. The salesman was also aggressive and seemed to be making things up on the fly – I just felt sketched out and like I didn’t have access to the real information about the mattresses I was looking at.

Around this time, Avocado Mattress‘s ads for their vegan mattress kept popping up in my Facebook feed. How convenient! We could have spent forever researching mattresses and visiting stores. But we figured there was nothing to lose in trying out the one mattress marketed as vegan.

Avocado Mattress Composition

Avocado Mattress makes two mattress models: Green (made from wool) and Vegan (made from cotton). Everything else about the two mattresses is the same. Neither mattress uses polyurethane foams, polyester, or toxic fire retardants. A lot of people are worried about toxic off-gassing from mattresses and Avocado addresses those concerns with transparency about their materials.

The vegan mattress is made from 100% GOLS organic certified latex, GOTS organic certified cotton from Texas, and up to 1,414 pocketed support coils. The mattress is also certified vegan by Vegan Action. You may recognize this symbol from other vegan products they certify.

Choosing the Avocado Vegan Mattress with Pillow-Top

Avocado mattresses are available in one level of firmness – which is firm. Not extra-firm, just regular firm. Since my husband is not a fan of firm, and I had started to question whether it was really good for me, we opted for the additional pillow-top.

The pillow-top is permanently attached to the top of the mattress and provides two more inches of plush organic latex. After using this for a few months I now think a firm base with a plush top is the perfect combo.

What about the button tufts?

As a light sleeper who is bothered by little things like jewelry or hair in my face, I was worried I would feel the hand-sewn button tufts on the pillow-top. I grew up with smooth ultra-firm latex, so I’ve just never had that sort of thing before. Well, I am happy to report that I don’t notice the button tufts at all.

Avocado Mattress Price

Avocado mattresses fall in the mid to high price point range. They’re made in the USA from certified organic materials, but I think because Avocado is selling direct-to-consumer instead of through brick-and-mortar stores the company is able to charge less than premium brands like Simmons Beautyrest Black.

Check Avocado for the latest prices, but at the time of writing, vegan mattresses range from $959 for a twin mattress and $240 for an additional twin pillow-top, to $1,699 for a California king and $500 for a cal king pillow-top. Avocado also offers financing through Affirm.

After going cheap on our last mattress, we decided that the amount of time spent in bed, and the importance of sleep and of back health made the price of Avocado worth it for us.

Delivery and Set-Up

This box fit a California king mattress.

The Avocado Mattress ships in a box for free. But we opted for the $199 in-home delivery and set-up because of stairs and my back. Two weeks after placing the order, I received an e-mail and phone call to set up a delivery window. On the day of delivery, two men came with the box and brought it upstairs. Let me tell you, the box was heavy!

They took the rolled up mattress out of the box and placed it on the bed frame where we watched it unfurl. It was pretty cool. Then they took away our old mattress for free, for either recycling or donation, which was a definite plus.

New Mattress Smell

Ronnie took a nap as soon as the delivery guys left.

I am very sensitive to smell. There was no chemical smell but there was a slight mustiness. It wasn’t mildew which I can recognize in an instant, but just a kind of subtle gym locker smell, like from something that has been compressed for a while and needs to breathe. I was worried about how long the smell would stay because  although it was mild I didn’t like it. However, after two nights it was completely gone and I couldn’t smell it through the sheets while sleeping anyway.

Comfort

It’s been three months and my back pain is gone even though I’m now 5 months pregnant. I credit this to both the mattress and to switching to a standing desk and adding a lumbar support pillow to me car around the same time. My husband really likes the new mattress as well. And so do the cats.

How do sheets fit?

With the pillow-top, the mattress is quite deep and our old fitted sheets pop off a corner occasionally. We will switch to deep-pocket fitted sheets on our next sheet purchase to accommodate the pillow-top.

Sustainability

Avocado Green Mattress is focused on sustainability. Besides using sustainably sourced materials, the company is a member of CarbonFund. Avocado purchases carbon offsets through CarbonFund to offset all emissions from the manufacture and shipping of their products. And, as a member of 1% for the planet, Avocado gives back 1% of corporate profits to environmental non-profits.
