Palm Oil is vegan but there are serious problems surrounding its production. Palm Oil is derived from the fruit of certain palm trees and is used in a variety of products including snack foods and cosmetics. The palm oil industry has come under scrutiny for human rights abuses as well as deforestation, famously threatening the survival of the orangutan population. The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) issues certification to some palm oil, indicating that it is sustainable. Much palm oil used today is not certified, AND recent investigations have found that even RSPO-accredited palm oils have involved flagrant human rights violations.
