E170 may or may not be vegAN. Also known as Calcium Carbonate, E170 is used as a surface coating, an anti-caking agent, a filling agent in pharmaceuticals, and a stablizer in canned fruit. It can be derived from marble, limestone, egg shells, crushed snails, pearls and oyster shells. Please check with the manufacturer to find out the source of E170. When you see an “E-number” like E170, it refers to an ingredient that has been approved by the European Union for use as a food additive.
