In Search of Vegan Protein Bars that Aren’t Junk Food

UPDATED ON November 13th, 2017

Vegan protein bars are important for me when I’m not sure I’ll have access to vegan food for some time. When visiting relatives, on the road, or stuck at an airport, I feel more secure with a few of these in my backpack. My picks are vegan protein bars high in protein, low in sugar, that don’t make me want to vomit. This list is pretty small and might not have the usual suspects. I just can’t in good conscience recommend a bar that has more than half the amount of added sugar I’m supposed to have in a day. Hopefully I’ll have more vegan protein bars to add to the list soon.

LIST OF RECOMMENDED VEGAN PROTEIN BARS

SimplyProtein Bars

SimplyProtein Peanut Butter Chocolate Bars have only 1 gram of sugar, and 15 grams of protein. That might be the best protein to sugar ratio on the market! They also have some fiber and calcium. The whole SimplyProtein Bar line is vegan, but not all of the company’s other products are. The taste can be a little chalky, but within this genre of future food, it’s not bad.

Raw Rev Glo Bars

Raw Rev Glo Vegan Protein Bars
Raw Rev is an explicitly vegan company. My Raw Rev Glo pick is the Creamy Peanut Butter and Sea Salt flavor because it has 15g protein and only 2g sugar. Raw Rev Glo bars are also high in iron and fiber, and the taste is good – savory, not sweet. Apparently these are good for the Keto diet and low carb diet (LCHF), and they’re certified gluten free and GMO free.

Garden of Life Performance Protein Bars

Garden of Life Vegan Protein Bars
Garden of Life Performance Protein Bars are all vegan. I’ve only tried the peanut butter chocolate flavor and I like it. That bar has 20g protein and 8g sugar, not a bad ratio. Garden of Life Performance Protein Bars are all certified USDA organic, gluten free, soy free, dairy free, and Non-GMO project verified. They’re also NSF Certified For Sport® and Informed-Choice for Sport Certified. This means they’ve been double checked to make sure they don’t contain banned substances.

GoMacro Bars

GoMacro Vegan Protein Bars
All GoMacro bars are vegan. Sunflower Butter + Chocolate and Cashew Caramel have the lowest added sugar, at 10g/bar, and 10g and 11g of protein respectively. The Sunflower Butter (called “Protein Purity“) is probably the most boring flavor but it’s also my favorite because it’s not too sweet or salty. GoMacro bars are 2.4oz (larger than most) and they’re definitely the most filling bar I’ve had. These bars have held me over for a meal while traveling and walking around. GoMacro bars usually cost over $3 at stores, but you can buy them in bulk online for less. Remember, when you look at the cost, they’re almost twice as big as a lot of other bars. GoMacro bars are all USDA organic certified, certified gluten free, soy free, Non-GMO project verified, vegan certified, kosher certified, and macrobiotic.
